Colleges nationwide are revisiting their emergency-response plans in the wake of the attack on the Ohio State University campus Monday that left 11 injured and the attacker dead.

Many universities, including Ohio State’s Columbus campus, are located in urban areas that can’t be completely cordoned off from vehicular traffic or unauthorized people. And while access to residence halls is often restricted to students, authorities remain concerned about what happens if a student is the assailant.

The attacker at the Ohio State campus, Abdul Razak Ali Artan, was a logistics-management student at the business school and officials say he may have been inspired by the Islamic State terror group.

We tried hard to ignore the clown hysteria that’s gotten so much attention in the last week. It’s not typically in Campus Safety’s nature to report on something just because it’s been covered by so many other media outlets.

But the clown controversy is, unfortunately affecting public safety and police departments across the country and not all of the stories are a hoax.

In fact, many schools at all grade levels have begun warning students about bringing clown masks on campus as school officials everywhere struggle to decide on an appropriate response to such a ridiculous situation.

Although there are no prevention strategies for active killer-types of attacks that have been proven to work 100 percent of the time, there are prevention approaches that are worth the effort they require. A number of these have been used to successfully avert mass casualty attacks, and some of these have been effective in preventing multiple attacks.

In every planned attack that I have worked to date, the media reporting the actual facts of the cases is likely to be inaccurate in many regards. Only the full case file will give us a reliable picture of what happened and what if any real opportunities there might have been to prevent these attacks. However, these types of case reviews often reveal at least some potential for interrupting large-scale attacks (see Active Killer Trends sidebar below).

Newtown, Connecticut will welcome the public into its new Sandy Hook Elementary School four years after a mass shooting in the town shook the country.

The building layout bears no resemblance to the old school where the tragedy took place, which was torn down in 2013. A lawsuit filed by two of the victims’ families argues security at the old Sandy Hook was inadequate, particularly in classrooms.

Campus Safety magazine (CS) is pleased to announce that Stan Skipworth, Claremont University Consortium’s director of campus safety; Lisa Terry, University of North Carolina Health Care’s director of hospital police and transportation; and Kevin Wren, Rock Hill (S.C.) Schools’ director of campus security systems have been names this year’s Directors of the Year.
